Two current, and one former, JPL employee receive the 2008 award, recognizing contributions to robotics enabling effective autonomous operations of science investigations under extreme conditions on the planet Mars. They are: Larry Matthies, Paul Backes, and Eric Baumgartner. Larry is currently group supervisor and senior research scientist of computer vision at JPL. Paul is supervisor of robotic mobility and manipulation and principal member of the technical staff. Eric, a former JPL robotics group supervisor, is now dean of engineering at Ohio Northern University.
